What is Google Business Profile and why your business needs it
December 22, 2025 · 6 min read

When someone searches “hardware store near me” or “barbershop in Brooklyn”, the first results are not websites: they are listings with photos, addresses, stars and a call button. Those listings are Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business), and they are free. If you haven't set yours up, you are handing customers to your competition.
In this article I explain exactly what it is, why Google ranks it above any website, and the 4 key settings that separate you from the average listing. It is one of the highest-ROI local marketing actions you can take.
What it is and where it appears
Google Business Profile is a free listing Google offers to any physical or locally-serving business. It appears when someone searches your brand name or a service near them. It shows up in three places: Google search results (the side panel), Google Maps, and the “local 3-pack” (the block with three featured businesses that appears at the top of many local searches).
For Google, the listing weighs more than your website in local searches. That means a business with no site but a strong listing can rank above a competitor with a site but no listing. That's why it is the most important digital asset for any neighborhood business: spa, barbershop, restaurant, hardware store, workshop, clinic.
The 4 settings that separate you from the average listing
1. Exact, consistent name. The name on your listing must match your storefront, your social handles and your domain. Don't stuff keywords like “Gemelo Hardware - Brooklyn Paint Supplies”. Google penalizes that. To understand why consistency matters, read why you need business email.
2. Real, recent photos. Upload at least 10 photos: storefront, interior, products, team. Listings with more than 100 photos get up to 5x more direction requests than those with fewer than 10. Refresh at least monthly.
3. Correct primary category. You can only pick one primary category. If you are a “barbershop with spa”, pick the one that represents most of your revenue, not the one that sounds cooler. Your primary category defines which searches you show up in.
4. Reply to every review. Replying to reviews, even negative ones, signals to Google that the listing is active and boosts your visibility. A short, professional reply to a bad review converts more customers than ten unanswered five-star reviews.
How it connects to your website
Having a listing without a website works, but having both works much better. When your listing links to a professional site with the same name, logo and phone number, Google understands you are an established business and boosts your ranking. That is the cheapest, most effective local SEO recipe.
That's why the Grow With Us plan includes initial Google Business Profile setup alongside your website. We save you hours fighting with the verification process (which now requires a storefront video instead of a postcard) and leave everything connected from day one. If later you want to measure whether it works, read how much does a website cost for context on infrastructure investment.
Google Business Profile is free, takes under an hour to set up right, and generates more phone calls than any paid campaign you'll try this year. If you want us to set it up alongside your website and professional email, see the Grow With Us plan and we'll start today.
