Wix vs a professional website: which should you pick?
January 12, 2026 · 7 min read

Wix, Squarespace, Shopify, Jimdo and friends promise a website in one afternoon for $15 a month. And technically, they deliver. The problem is not what they promise, but what they don't tell you: the real cost when your business grows, the lock-in to the platform, and the impact on your Google ranking.
This article is not an attack on Wix nor a blind defense of the “professional” website. It is an honest guide so you can decide which one fits your stage, budget and business model. Spoiler: for some businesses Wix is perfect, and for others it is a brake disguised as a solution.
When Wix actually makes sense
If your business is just validating an idea, if you are not sure you'll still be running in 6 months, or if your site is just a digital business card with three sections, Wix solves it. It is fast to build, doesn't need a developer, and the $15/month basic plan won't break anyone.
It also works if your traffic is low (under 1,000 monthly visits) and you don't depend on Google ranking to sell. For example: a coach who already has referral clients and just needs a site to “show” when asked for the link.
What the cheap builder doesn't tell you
SEO is limited. Although Wix has improved, it still produces heavy code that loads slower than a properly built site. In LATAM and rural US, where many users browse from mobile on 4G, that 1-2 second difference translates into lost visitors. And Google penalizes slow speed by lowering your ranking.
You don't own the site. If Wix raises prices next year (they have), or changes its model, you have nowhere to go without rebuilding. Migrating from Wix to another platform is notoriously hard: content exports incomplete and links break.
“Free” isn't free. The free plan shows Wix ads above your brand and uses a domain like yourbusiness.wixsite.com/home. To use your own domain, you already pay $15/month. That is $180/year. Five years: $900. Compared to a professional annual plan, it doesn't always come out cheaper.
When a professional website pays off
If your business depends on being found on Google, if you want business email on the same domain, if you receive more than 50 quotes a month and need to optimize conversion, or if you plan to sell online seriously: a professional site pays back in under a year.
A professional site uses modern tech (semantic HTML, optimized images, fast mobile load), gives you full control over your domain, lets you connect tools like Kommo CRM, and scales with your business without forcing migrations. The Grow With Us plan costs $99 USD/year (less than Wix Premium) and includes site, domain, mailboxes, Cloudflare hosting and initial Google Business Profile setup.
How to decide today
Ask yourself three questions: does my business depend on showing up on Google? If yes, go professional. Will my business exist in 3 years? If you plan to grow, build a solid base from the start. How much is my time worth? If you spend hours fighting Wix templates, that time could be selling.

Wix is perfect for validating ideas. A professional website is perfect for growing a business. The question is not which is better, but what stage you are in. If you have passed validation and want a foundation that lasts years, see the Grow With Us plan. For $99 USD/year we start this week.
